What the Key West 203 FS Does Right

The 203 FS is an excellent choice for solo fishing trips. Its smaller size and great handling make it easy to switch fishing spots quickly and efficiently. All our locations at Freedom Boat Club have a Key West 203 FS to reserve.

Design and Build

The Key West 203FS features a modern design that is both functional and visually appealing. Its center console layout maximizes fishing space while still offering decent seating options. With a draft of only 12 inches, this boat can easily navigate shallow waters, making it versatile for various environments. Perfect boat for boating in Northeast Florida.

Performance

The 203FS is powered by a Yamaha 150HP engine, which provides sufficient power to get the boat on plane quickly and maintain a steady cruising speed. The boat is responsive and nimble, making it a joy to drive. However, if you have three or more people on board, you might notice a slight reduction in that quickness.

In terms of stability, the 203FS feels a bit small. While it handles well while driving to your fishing spot, offering a smooth ride even in choppy conditions, it struggles when anchored or tied up at a dock. The boat’s 8-foot beam and smaller size mean it doesn’t handle wake from passing boats as well as larger models—you might find yourself having to brace when other boats pass by.

Comfort

This is where the 203FS falls short for our situation. As a family of three with a teenage daughter, we often find the boat too cramped. Moving between the stern and bow can be challenging, especially when all three of us are onboard. The helm chair is comfortable and can accommodate two people, but overall space is limited.

The seats are upholstered in light gray with dark gray accents, and two cup holders are visible in the center between the seats. A stainless steel grab rail lines the edges of the bow for added safety, and a hatch is visible on the deck in front of the seating area. The design provides a comfortable and spacious area for passengers to relax at the front of the boat.

However, the 203FS truly shines when you’re out on the water alone. With only one person aboard, there’s plenty of room to move around and enjoy the day. If I were boating solo, this boat would be at the top of my list.

The seating is designed to provide ample space for passengers to sit comfortably at the stern of the boat. Behind the seating area, a Yamaha 150 outboard motor is visible. The area includes rod holders on the side and stainless steel cup holders. The layout is practical, offering both comfort and functionality for family outings or fishing trips.

Electronics

The 203FS comes standard with a Garmin GPS and fishfinder. The stereo system is sufficiently loud, and there’s a power outlet on the dash for added convenience. Trim tabs are optional, but I consider them a must-have after having used them so much.

Two stainless steel cup holders are positioned to the right of the throttle, along with a VHF radio mounted on the top right side of the console. Fuel Efficiency

As expected with a smaller boat and a 150HP engine, the fuel economy is excellent. At a cruising speed of 25 MPH, you can achieve around 4.5 MPG at 3000 RPM. If you push it to over 5000 RPM, the boat can reach speeds of 40+ MPH, still delivering an impressive 2.5 MPG.

Pricing

The pricing for the Key West 203FS is quite reasonable. A brand new model typically costs around $60,000 or less, which is a good deal in today’s market. You can also find 2019 used models for under $40,000. Compared to its larger counterpart, the 239FS, you’re saving about $40,000.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Versatility: Ideal for fishermen who want a smaller, more nimble boat.
  • Comfortable Layout: Well-designed seating and good use of space for a compact boat.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Excellent fuel economy for extended trips.
  • Great Value: Competitive pricing for the features and performance offered.

Cons:

  • Size: Feels cramped for a family of three.
  • Wake Handling: Doesn’t take wake well, leading to significant rolling.

Final Verdict

The Key West 203FS is a great choice for someone looking for a simple, economical, and solo-friendly boat. It’s versatile, easy to handle, and offers excellent fuel efficiency. However, for a family of three, it may feel a bit cramped. If you’re primarily boating alone or with one other person, the 203FS is definitely worth considering, but if you often have more passengers, you might want to explore larger options. Definitely check out this boat at some of the Florida Boat Shows.
