Hurricane SS 201: A Surprising Favorite for Family Outings

I never thought I’d like the Hurricane SS 201 until we took one out for a spin. We were impressed by how it combines the comfort of a pontoon-like boat with the performance needed for a variety of water activities. This boat quickly became a favorite for family outings and entertaining guests. The Hurricane Deck Boat is available to reserve at all four of our Freedom Boat Club locations.

Design and Build

The Hurricane SS 201 features a spacious, open-deck design, ideal for those who prioritize comfort and versatility. The boat has a very comfortable bow seating area and ample seating at the stern, making it perfect for socializing. It’s rated to seat up to 12, though I wouldn’t recommend more than seven onboard at once—seven was even pushing it.

Three people relaxing on the bow of a boat as it cruises on clear, calm water. The two women are lounging on spacious, cushioned seats with striped towels under them, while the man is seated at the helm steering the boat. All three are wearing hats and swimwear, enjoying the sun and the breeze. The boat’s design features comfortable, wrap-around seating and a Bimini top providing some shade. In the background, a scenic shoreline with greenery and buildings can be seen, contributing to the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

While center console boats offer better visibility, the deck boat design of the SS 201 prioritizes comfort and space, making it great for families and larger groups.

Performance

Equipped with a Yamaha F150 engine, the Hurricane SS 201 delivers solid performance for a deck boat. While it may not reach the top speeds of a dedicated fishing or speedboat, it comfortably cruises at around 20-25 MPH, with a top speed of about 40 MPH. The SS 201 handles smoothly and remains stable, even with a full load of passengers, making it an excellent choice for leisurely cruises or water sports. It doesn’t take turns as easily as a V-shaped hull boat, but it doesn’t roll as much either.

Comfort

The Hurricane SS 201 excels in comfort, with plenty of seating options that make it perfect for a day on the water with family or friends. The boat features wraparound seating at the bow, decent helm seating, and a large rear bench seat, all with plush cushions. The open layout allows for easy movement around the boat, providing plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun.

Storage

Storage on the Hurricane SS 201 is more than adequate, with under-seat compartments, a dedicated anchor locker, and additional storage under the helm. This boat is designed to keep your gear organized and out of the way, making the most of the available space.

Features

The Hurricane SS 201 comes standard with a good number of features:

  • Bimini Top for Shade
  • Built-In Cooler
  • Ample Cup Holders
  • Plenty of Seating with Wraparound Cushions

Electronics

The SS 201 comes equipped with a basic Garmin GPS and sound system, though both are on the smaller side, so upgrading would be one of my first priorities. The sound system is good, and the lighting is adequate for most situations.

Fuel Efficiency

The Yamaha F150 engine on the Hurricane SS 201 provides reasonable fuel efficiency, offering around 3.5 MPG at cruising speeds. With a 50-gallon fuel tank, the SS 201 has enough range for a full day of activities without needing to refuel frequently. We do a lot of tubing with the Hurricane, and the gas bill is never above $40.

Pricing

A new Hurricane SS 201 is priced around $50k, depending on the options you choose. They hold their value well, with a 2020 model typically going for around $35k. You can find Hurricane Deck Boats at smaller shows.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a boat that prioritizes comfort, versatility, and socializing, the Hurricane SS 201 is an excellent choice.
